As I sit on the couch watching Hurricane Irma updates, I keep getting text messages every few minutes from friends and family from around the country. Everyone is worried about us living in Florida…right in the path of Hurricane Irma. As I text back a friend in Washington, it dawns on me that many people have never been through a hurricane. As a Floridian, I have spent over 40 years of my life going through hurricanes. For us, they are the ultimate excuse to skip school, hang out with family, and have a Hurricane Party with tons of junk food. For others, hurricanes just seem terrifying!
As a lifelong Floridian, hurricanes are just part of life. If you live at the beach, you almost always have to evacuate your home. You come up with a plan and either stay with friends or family in safer areas either in-land or away from the incoming storm.
Empty shelves at Publix (local grocery)
You stock up on food, water, and supplies early; before the shelves are empty. You bring in everything from outside and stash it in the garage. You board up the windows and then you bunker down!

It is a life that we are used to in Florida. One of the best things about a hurricane is you have plenty of time to prepare, so you and your family are safe.
Here are some videos to show what it is like to live in Florida with a Hurricane coming your way…

As we always say in Florida when a hurricane is coming our way…hope for the best, but prepare for the worse. Our thoughts and prayers are with our fellow Floridians during Hurricane Irma. Stay safe my fellow Floridians!
Be sure you subscribe to Jones Family Travels. We will be live streaming during the hurricane and then at Disney World (on Tuesday to see the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.)
