Do you dream of traveling the world without spending a fortune? You’re not alone! The truth is, there are plenty of ways to see the world for free or a big discount, if you know where to look. 😉 We have been traveling as a family for 200+ days of the year over the past 18 years. We have discovered some incredible strategies for making travel more affordable. Let’s jump right in.

1. Become a Travel Agent

One of the best kept secrets in the travel industry is that travel agents often get free or discounted travel. Did you ever think you could become a travel agent? Being a travel agent has helped us travel the world over the past 18 years with the kids.

Some of the amazing travel perks for travel agents include:

  • Free or discounted “FAM” (familiarization) trips from top cruise lines, theme parks, resorts, and destinations. This week I got an invitation to go to Croatia for 3 nights for free. Plus, Royal Caribbean had cruises from $10 per person per night. There are lots of FAM trips available for travel agents.
  • Agent discounts on personal travel for you and your family. One of my favorites is free tickets to theme parks and $25 per person/night cruise fares on cruises like Disney.
  • Opportunities to sell travel part-time or full-time to help pay for your own adventures.

Here is some of our team on a free trip to Disney World for a FAM celebrating our 25th Anniversary. ⬇️

If you’ve ever thought, “I wish I could travel more and earn money while doing it,” become a travel agent. This could be the perfect path.

2. Volunteer Abroad

If you love meaningful experiences, programs like Workaway, WWOOF, or Peace Corps provide free room and board in exchange for work. You might:

  • Help on an organic farm in Italy.
  • Teach English in South America.
  • Assist in a community project in Asia.

It’s a fantastic way to travel deeply and affordably while making a difference.

3. House Sitting or Pet Sitting

Do you love pets? I love this opportunity for traveling more like a local. Platforms like TrustedHousesitters, Nomador, and HouseCarers connect travelers with homeowners around the world. Our family loves pets and this is one of our favorites!

You provide house or pet care in exchange for free accommodations.

  • Imagine spending a month in London caring for a sweet pup.
  • Or staying in a Paris apartment for free while a family vacations.
  • It’s perfect for animal lovers who want to travel affordably.

4. Maximize Travel Credit Card Rewards

Savvy travelers know how powerful credit card points and miles can be. With the right cards, you can earn free flights, hotel nights, and even upgrades. We have paid for (4) flights this year all using points from day to day expenses.

  • Use a travel rewards credit card for everyday spending.
  • Pay it off responsibly each month to avoid debt.
  • Redeem points for free adventures.

5. Join Group Trips with Exclusive Perks

I LOVE group trips! This is a fantastic way to save money and get exclusive perks. Group travel often comes with hidden perks like discounted rates, extra amenities, and sometimes even free spots for group leaders.

Some of my favorite group discounts include:

  • Disney World offers exclusive After 2 PM and After 4 PM tickets at huge discounts, along with discount prices at resorts for conferences on property.
  • Affinity groups (like homeschool, teachers, college alumni, sorority/fraternity, or church groups) often have discount prices on hotels/cruises (that you cannot find on your own) along with extra freebies like breakfast, shipboard credits, in room gifts, and more.

Traveling with a group not only saves you money, but also creates lifelong friendships.

6. Work While You Travel

Thanks to remote work opportunities, it’s easier than ever to earn money while exploring the world. Combine a laptop friendly career with discounted travel options (like being a travel advisor), and you’ve got a recipe for long term travel freedom.

7. Invite Your Friends & Family

This tip is a hidden gem!

Did you know you could get a free stateroom on cruise lines like Norwegian Cruise Line when you have a group with 8 staterooms (16 guests)? For river cruise lines like AmaWaterways it is only 5 staterooms (10 guests). You would be amazed how quickly you get a group when you just ask your friends and family if anyone wants to join you.

Do you have a club, organization, or a family reunion that may want to travel together? Ask them. Once you reach that threshold number, you could go for free!
